Romania might be somewhere you’ve never considered visiting. Here we delve into the secrets of this fascinating land and discover what makes it unique.
Think of Transylvania and images of vampires might spring to mind. Whilst Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula is a work of fiction, this region in the very heart of Romania is somewhere rather special. Horse-drawn carts roll along dusty tracks and Bran Castle is a wonderful landmark commonly known as Dracula’s castle.
After falling in love with Romania, Prince Charles, now King Charles iii purchased and renovated two rural properties in the heart of Transylvania. When the prince himself is not in residence, you could choose to spend a night or two in his guesthouse in Zalanpatak.
For many, Romania is known only as the home of ruthless dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Under his leadership the country’s people suffered great hardship. In the early 1970s he ordered the building of the Transfagarasan mountain road – with its sharp turns, tunnels and viaducts.
Romania has spawned some amazing athletes. In 1976, at the age of just 14, Nadia Comaneci became the first woman to score a perfect 10 in an Olympic gymnastics event. Early in the same decade, Ilie Nastase was ranked the world’s number one tennis player. With a reputation for being talented yet bad tempered, he won seven Grand Slam titles.
