The Inside Passage

Stretching 500 miles along the Pacific Ocean, the Inside Passage was shaped millions of years ago by the force of glaciers. Glacier Bay National Park

Juneau

Standing on one of the largest wilderness areas in the United States, Alaska’s remote capital of Juneau is simply unique. It sits between a waterway and an ice field, boasts stunning views of forests, peaks and glaciers and doesn’t have a road that goes in or out of the city. The misty city has a small town vibe but offers a lot for visitors.

Wander through Juneau Downtown and explore the many shops selling handicrafts created by locals. South Franklin Street is the area’s most famous thoroughfare and here you’ll find the Red Dog Saloon – a favourite among travellers and locals alike for over 75 years.

Juneau is known for its fresh seafood, so make sure to try freshly-caught fish on a seaside patio while taking in the spectacular scenery. 

Skagway

Skagway is a lively relic of the Klondike Gold Rush, when gold was discovered there in 1896 the town was the primary gateway to the gold fields. With its wooden sidewalks and turn-of-the-century buildings, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time as you stroll through the streets. The gold rush era buildings now house many local businesses, making it a great place to pick up artisan souvenirs. The locals here are some of the friendliest people you will ever meet, so make sure to chat to a Skagwegian about the town they are all so proud of.

Ketchikan

A quaint town clinging to a mountainside, Ketchikan is known as the ‘salmon capital of the world’, it's lovely to explore, and of course, it is the best place to sample some fresh Alaskan salmon. Historic Creek Street is one of the most popular things to see in Ketchikan. The antique boardwalk on wooden pilings stretches over Ketchikan Creek and was once the town’s red-light district, but is now the go to place for shopping, eating, photo opportunities and watching hordes of salmon swimming upstream.

Ketchikan is also known for its incredibly rich Native Alaskan culture and is the best place to learn about the native nations of Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian whose history is reflected in towering totem poles. Explore Totem Pole Park, where you can see these intricately carved totem poles up close.
