Why not make this the year to visit the USA’s Deep South, a region full of music, food and history? A Travelsphere escorted tour will ensure you see all the highlights and much more, too. Here are our top tips for the perfect holiday:

Get Into the Rhythm

Music is woven through almost every stage of a journey through America’s Deep South, and Nashville is the perfect place to start. Step inside historic RCA Studio B, known as the birthplace of the ‘Nashville Sound’, where artists including Elvis Presley recorded some of their best-known tracks, before exploring the exhibits and memorabilia of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

There’s also the option to experience live country music at the world-famous Grand Ole Opry. Don’t leave Nashville without a visit to one of the renowned music stores. You are sure to find your favourite new and ‘pre-loved’ sounds as you browse through the vinyl.

The musical journey continues in Memphis, where a city tour introduces you to Beale Street, the legendary home of the blues. You’ll also visit Sun Studio, where Elvis made his first recordings in 1954, before exploring Graceland and discovering more about his life and career.

Heading south through Mississippi adds another chapter to the story. The route crosses the Mississippi Delta, closely associated with the development of Delta blues, and stops in Indianola for a visit to the BB King Museum, celebrating the life and music of the ‘King of the Blues’.

Step Back in Time

The Deep South’s history reaches far beyond its musical heritage. The journey begins in Atlanta, where a sightseeing tour explores a city that played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement. Highlights include the birthplace of Dr Martin Luther King Jr., alongside Centennial Olympic Park and the Georgia State Capitol.

Further south, Natchez offers a glimpse into an earlier chapter of Southern history. Set on the banks of the Mississippi River, the city is known for its grand historic mansions, and Travelsphere includes a visit to an antebellum home where you can learn about life in the period before the American Civil War and see its architecture and original-style furnishings.

The Mississippi itself is another thread running through the region’s story. On our Best of the Deep South tour, you can opt to step aboard an authentic paddle steamer in New Orleans, listening to live jazz while you sip on a refreshing mint julep as you travel along the river and take in views of the city from the water.

Celebrate the ‘Big Easy’

New Orleans brings together many of the themes that make the Deep South so distinctive – history, music, architecture and a culture all its own.

A sightseeing tour introduces some of the city’s landmarks, including St Louis Cathedral and its distinctive above-ground cemeteries, before a guided walk reveals the character of the French Quarter. Along the way, you’ll discover Jackson Square, Pirate’s Alley and famous Bourbon Street.

There’s music here too, of course. The French Quarter walking tour finishes with a buffet brunch accompanied by live jazz in an outdoor courtyard – a fitting experience in the city widely associated with the birth of jazz.

Why not push the boat out and join the sparkling celebrations for Mardi Gras too. You’ll be in good company on our Travelsphere Best of the Deep South Special Departure which includes a ticket for the spectacular Mardi Gras parade. Look out for famous faces on the carnival floats and remember to catch as many colourful beads as you can.

Treat Your Taste Buds

Music may provide the soundtrack to the Deep South, but food is another huge part of its character. Memphis is particularly associated with barbecue, and Beale Street is lined with restaurants as well as music venues, making it an easy place to combine dinner with an evening of blues.

In New Orleans, Creole and Southern flavours provide plenty more to discover.  A steaming Creole gumbo is a Louisiana highlight and no visit to Crescent City would be complete without ‘café au lait’ and a beignet at Café du Monde. Your Travelsphere Holiday Director can recommend all the top spots.
